Our story

We believe that functional spaces should be beautiful and beautiful spaces should be functional. And for us, it’s a given that every landscape should be good for people and good for the environment. We started Portland Garden Design to help others in our community create outdoor spaces to use and enjoy, while also providing sustenance and habitat for the creatures we need to maintain a healthy ecosystem. We feel extremely fortunate to live in this place with so many others who share these values.

Liz Schneider

Image of Liz our cofounder, lead garden designer in portland oregon. She has experience in garden designs, rain gardens, native plant gardens, backyard habitats, and much more.

I am a plant person with a deep love for Portland, and a passion for bringing people and nature closer together. There are few things I enjoy more than turning a crispy brown rectangle into a captivating pollinator magnet of a garden or converting that seasonal stream that comes out of your downspout into a lush rain garden that is the view from your dreamy hammock nook.   

I am an Oregonian who has spent time in Portland long enough to remember Macheezmo Mouse, and today I feel lucky to call Concordia home. When not reading the Xera Nursery plant descriptions (seriously - check it out!), I love building things with my husband and putzing in the garden…really any garden.

Amy Armstrong

Plants have always been at the center of my life. My dad used to walk me around and quiz me on the names of plants. This is still my favorite thing to do (even on solo walks).

I’ve always seen myself as a bit of a collector—of skills, experiences, and creative interests. I believe we’re all the sum of our parts, and the work we do is shaped by everything we’ve picked up along the way. I have a background in floral design, I’ve grown food and flowers, and now I shape gardens. I’m passionate about creating outdoor spaces that feel good to be in and easy to care for. The beauty that surrounds us helps influence our joy and I hope to help you create that feeling in your own backyard.
